Sayo ∘ Mushishi

a head full of empty drawers

Sayo is likely perceived at first as an absentminded mother of sorts — ditzy, airheaded, naive, though the reason behind the exaggeration of her faults is somewhat ominous. In her world there are special creatures that co-exist with humanity called mushi, and the mushi she had encountered in particular had heavily impacted her life. While sleeping beneath a tree near her home, a kagedama crawled into her ear. This shadow-like, unremovable creature feeds then on her memories to survive.

Because of this, Sayo is unable to keep memory of most things. She can remember people who are consistently in her life, and things she does often, as well as common household items. But things that only come in the spring? The winter? Items she may have as an occasional treat? Family that lives farther away? All gone. It's only through important routine that she can maintain a semi-normal life.

As of her canon point, she had learned a terrible truth about her husband, and to salvage their host, the kagedama had purged many, many memories to help her suffering. Including the memory of her husband, of course. If you're interested in the full story, the wiki for it is here, and the episode is the 16th in Mushishi's run.

First impressions

Visual / Personality

She is a Japanese woman from a past (albeit fantasy) Japan. She can be seen in the average kimono of the time, though she is very open to the concept of wearing other clothing. She has short, dark hair, and appears rather youthful for her 30's. She often looks lost in thought or a little puzzled by something in her general vicinity. Despite her situation, she also often has a cheery demeanor!

Permissions

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: She will be a little confused, but she won't mind terribly.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Sure! But why would you. 😭

ROMANCE/FLIRTING: Yes! Do it. She'll be flattered by flirting, probably. Also open to less serious shipping or cute little ships in general. If there's something deeper developing, we can totally plot something more extensive.

SEXUAL CONTENT: I'm 100% okay with Sayo relearning the concept of sex and enjoying sex! I don't personally plan to tag into someone with sexual content, however, just for the sake of making sure nobody is uncomfortable. I know that someone who has memory issues may not be the kind of partner someone wants in a thread. Just know that I'm open to it!

PSYCHIC ABILITIES/MIND READING: That's an interesting one! Go for it. Memory readers will be baffled, because Sayo's thoughts are loud and proud and clearly hers, but there is a quieter presence in her head that is difficult to understand and very animalistic in nature. I'm okay with mind-readers or anyone with powers to recognize there's something else living in her head, feeding off her.

BACKTAGGING: 100% down for backtags.

FOURTH WALLING: N/A, she's not from a extensively known canon.

THREADHOPPING: Network, yes! Hit me up if you wanna threadjack action stuff.

34th Memory [video]

[Deep breath. Relax. There we go. It'll all be okay. It'll all work out.

(Perhaps not.)

She can't let herself think like that; can't think about what it could mean for Mithos, or for anyone in his predicament. She doesn't want to leave him to this place. There has to be a solution - there has to be something else. She won't give up, not until the very last waking second. But there lies an issue - she can't leave Kaji behind. She doesn't want to leave Mithos and her 'family' here behind either. It's so hard to figure out what her heart needs and wants - but this thing... this, she's certain about.]

... If this is almost the end, I suppose I might as well face my weaknesses, shouldn't I? What are yours, do you think? The weaknesses you may have to face. Before the end of the battle. What do you think that is...?

[She smiles, a bit forced, running a hand over her hair.]

I guess I can be direct. I have... a sort of creature in my head that eats my memories day to day; I've forgotten... so much. Places. Moments in time. People. I try not to think about it too much, because it certainly doesn't do me any good, does it? I don't even remember how I'd gotten this creature. I don't even remember the day the mushi master came to me and told me what happened. But the truth is... the shifts here made me remember some things. I remember... going to find my husband; he was a traveler in his trade, and he hadn't been home for so long. So I went to search for him. I wanted to be brave, but in the end, he was -

[She steadies a breath. Memories are hard. Sometimes she wonders if forgetting would be easier.

But that's the point, isn't it?]

He had made a new family and abandoned mine. I had been so destroyed by it, I let the pain take over, and I lost... almost everything. My memories were nearly all eaten away, because I couldn't handle pushing back against that and the kagedama in my head. I was fortunate enough that my depression didn't take away memory of my home, of my son. I can't even imagine what life would have been like, had I lost those as well. Regardless... I want to be stronger now than I was then. I remember what he did - and...

I'm okay now.

[She clears her throat.]

I think - I'm ready. I can't let this keep taking away from me anymore if I can change it. But I can't let the possible dangers of it scare me away anymore. So... If there's anyone who is able to and willing to, the way to destroy it... [She hasn't forgotten. She's written it down, always reviews it every morning, never forgets.] The creature's in my head, and only light can kill it, so if anyone is capable of going into my head to destroy the thing...

I want to be free of them. I want to remember every face and moment here. I'm tired of losing.

[Even if potential dangers are present, or if there's complications, it's now or never. Right?]

And - I'm ready to sleep again. I want to remember.

Um - thank you for listening.

[She offers the screen a bow, before turning it off.]

comments

33rd Memory [Video]

[Sayo has been readjusting to... y'know, being here again, even though she feels as though she'd never left. That was pretty interesting. Raine had been very careful and helpful with her wording, but it's still a lot to wrap her head around, and she can't help but feel a number of things. Relief, maybe. Disappointment that she'd left people behind. Confusion at the change in her life, which was so centered on routine... She bites her lip and tries to remember how to use the journal, because even though she hasn't really lost memory of Luceti, she is still infected with a mushi that eats her memories. So. It's best that she make this post.]

Hello! You may remember me... if you were here a long time ago. My name is Sayo, and... I used to be a waitress here! And I'm hoping that it would be okay to be one again at the Seventh Heaven again, if that's alright... I know my notes probably aren't hanging up everywhere anymore, but I'm sure I can re-learn it! I'll give it my best shot!

[Hmmm. She tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. She still has a scar behind it; she still remembers what her husband has done; she's just... forgotten some of the other things.]

I'm also sorry if I don't recognize you. I have a memory... um, problem, where I lose a lot of important memories from day to day. That said — i-if anyone has anything I should know about this place, I would love to hear it, because I'm not sure how much I remember outside of a few faces and my old job here.

[A-ahaha... ha... She's trying to be light about it, okay.]

Like — [She hesitates, frowning and leaning in to speak more quietly, a little more anxious.] What are these things on my back?

[THEY ARE JUST HERE ON MY BACK AND THEY TWITCH A LOT AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE? ARE THEY JACKED UP ARMS? HAVE WE ALWAYS HAD JACKED UP SECONDARY ARMS COVERED IN WEIRD HAIR???]

comments

32nd Memory [Action]

[She stays up all night and thinks about things she really doesn't want to think about. But it's hard not to.

She just needs to... push through this. She can't let it shake up everything she's made here. She has to try...

But it's been harder and harder to keep this up. Not because of weariness--she's more tired than usual, but it's nothing she couldn't handle, right? It's just a little work, just a few important distractions. In the morning she makes Mithos something to eat quickly, smiling as always, asking him how he's doing, making sure he's okay... She's been having a lot of trouble remembering things lately. She'd forgotten what rice is. She can't recall what seasons are. She's having trouble remembering what the names of things are. She's not sure.

Sayo visits the item and grocery shop in an attempt to reconcile this; she flips through her notes and looks at things, mystified by most. This isn't that out of the ordinary, right? She keeps reminding herself it's not that surprising. She has a mental condition, and sometimes she forgets. That's all. So she quickly begins to scrawl out things, brow furrowed and mind focused, in the hopes they'll stick in her head this time around.

When she goes to the restaurant, she struggles to remember routines. The lights are a mystery, as are the stove and the cutlery. Most of the drinks are lost on her. She's serving, but she's not really there, half the time. Plates are starting to be delivered to the wrong tables. Days are forgotten, meetings forgotten, conversations from before are missing. It's hard to all keep up with, so she hides in the kitchen sometimes to recollect herself; sometimes it feels like she's on a balancing board and she's about to tumble to the left or right. It scares her, makes an unnatural fear that tightens her stomach. Breathing feels difficult.

Why is it so hard to just carry on and push it all aside? Things are good here and it's all in the past, and she just wants to keep going.

But it just feels like control is slipping out of her hands. Just like before. Just like when she took Kaji's hand and ran.

With no finality to that chapter of her life, she's still running.

Whatever happens, one thing is unfortunate and true: she won't be making it to the tea shop today.]

((ooc: Sayo'll be passing out and sleeping for a few long days, so this will be the last post for interacting!))

comments

31st Memory [Video/Action]

[Sayo couldn't remember a lot concerning her kidnapping and how long she'd been gone (she never does), but it actually hadn't been long. Felt like a long time, but it wasn't. All she could think opening her eyes was that she had to go to work soon. She tries to drag herself to her feet using a fallen tree, reaching for the journal that had just fallen from numbed hands. The feed starts up staring up at the trees, where sun was streaming through.

And then the sounds of rustling stops. Off-screen, Sayo is reaching behind her ear shakily, under her hair, where a thumping jagged wound—newly stitched—ran from the back of her ear toward the back of her head. About three inches, but enough to scare her. It hurt to the touch, and maybe it was causing this pain thrumming in her head. Was this always there? This painful mark? And then it hits her.

Something's wrong.

Who's this person in her memories? Why is she thinking of these things? She doesn't remember—

"Mom, why didn't you say anything?!"

I just want to forget...

"Mom!!"

She tries to control her breathing, but the flood of images hit her from all sides, and she wraps her arms around herself. These things—she'd forgotten these things, she wanted to forget them.]

No...

[She jars the journal over with her leg, and clutches her head in her hands before she doubles over. She doesn't even remember his name. It's not fair that she remembers the rest of it: Kaji's hand clutched in hers, she fell, and then that was it. She'd forgotten. She'd forgotten what he'd done to her. She'd loved him so much—]

No!!

[Muffled by her kimono she screams at first, and then the tears start, raw and throaty sounds escaping her. Why did they give these back to her? She didn't want them. She was happy just having Kaji and never remembering the rest. She breathlessly reaches over and hits the journal away, and it lands upside down. Black screen.]

Why—why—

I thought I was... I thought you...

[She hadn't forgotten him the same way she'd played out in her mind.

He forgot her.]

[She'll get up and start wearily toward the village eventually. She just wants to get home--Mithos needs her, and she needs to get ready for the day, and... she's not sure what time it is, but she needs to go.]

[Through the first few days, she goes right back to work at the tea shop and the restaurant. She's found working to be... some sort of distraction. Anything is a welcomed distraction. She's not her usual best, but she'll try hard. She might be forgetting things that she wouldn't usually forget; lately, she's had a hard time focusing, so her notes are blurring together for her. She'll serve as usual, though. She'll be a good worker. Or at least a decent one, all things considered.]

comments

30th Memory [Action]

Day 1

[Sayo's laying in a clearing, donning her usual kimono, feeling a little worn - but at least she's back ... Back from where, again? She rubs her forehead, trying to think of why she's glad to be here again. Um. Did she go wandering outside again and fall asleep? With a sigh she starts trekking back home, confused... and a little worried, because she's pretty sure she doesn't sleep, so...

Before she gets up to go, a long shadowy creature (she and normal people can't see, unfortunately) crawls from her ear down into the forest. But of course it dies quickly without her sustaining it. Running into her? Be prepared for a few problems. Mainly, that when she smiles or laughs, she teleports.

She really likes to smile.]

Day 2 - 5

[Must not smile. Must not smile. Must not smile.

Sayo's back from her mallynap. Which she just re-learned about yesterday. Sob. She's going to the restaurant to help out, and she's at the tea shop, but you'll notice she's been trying to remain very stony-faced and determined. This is because if she doesn't, you may never get your tea. It may end up in someone's house. Must be careful. Cautious. Yes.]

Here you go...

[P o k e r f a c e, as she delivers your order. You're welcome.
29th Memory [Mallynap/Video]

[Sayo's aware of something following behind her on her way to work. She's aware after a few moments of exactly what it is, so she bites her lip and opens the journal, walking faster. Gotta hurry gotta hurry gotta hurry, these are droids, right? They've taken people a lot in her days around here. Has she ever met them before? She couldn't remember.]

I'm sorry but I think I won't be available for the tea shop or the restaurant for a while — I-I hope you can find a replacement for me in the meanw-

[She gasps and drops the journal, pulled off-screen - but her hoarse yell is coupled with a loud electric noise, and the screen is bright with... lightning? The droid's feet just sort of stammer a little at her as she steps backwards, hands out defensively. Her lightning from the filial spirit didn't really do much, but it was worth a shot... right... ?

Yeah, she gets dragged off kicking and yelling until they decide to sedate her. But at least she tried.

Worth a shot. v(`_`)v

DON'T MESS WITH MY STICKY NOTES WHILE I'M GONE.]

comments

28th Memory [Video/Action]

Ah! It's on—let's see—

[The camera jiggles on the journal a bit as she sets it down. The first thing people'll notice about this picture? She's in a room packed full with stacked things. Kimonos, blankets, quilts, all sorts of things with all sorts of patterns, all neatly piled in square mounds as tall as her. It's quite a sight, but mainly an example of how having entire nights to yourself to weave and sew turn into a hoarder's problem for someone like her.

She's all smiles, of course!]

Um, hello, Luceti! I noticed we had a large group of New Feathers just arriving, and my spare room was getting quite full, so I was wondering if you, um, needed or wanted any kimono or blankets, anything like that! I've had a blast making these... 'quilt' things, but I'm afraid I'm running out of room, so I'll need to clear it out soon.

They'll all be at the Item Shop if you want them, but if you have anything in particular you're looking for, I can see if I have it just for you. Here's one of the blankets I've done... Oh, this one will do nicely—

[See? They're totally adorbs.]

And welcome to Luceti, by the way! I'm Sayo, and it's wonderful to meet you! If you ever need any help, just let me know; I always have time for that sort of thing, so it'd be no problem, I assure you.

[After her entry and replies, she'll be oooffff to work! And then she'll be carrying super-tall piles of things from her apartment to the item shop. Yeah. Wish her luck. She's already winded by the 10th trip. And possibly half-toppling over. SHE DID NOT EXPECT THIS EFFORT.

Just to note, the entry takes place at around 11 am, and the item shop exploring is about 6 in the evening. :|b]

comments

27th Memory [Action/Voice][Dated to Early morning Feb. 27th]

[Sayo's in the Battle Dome.

Standing in front of a replica of her homeworld--of the river and cherry blossom tree. The relief that blossoms on her face is a private one, as she quietly lays down right in the middle of it all and stays that way for quite some time, holding her journal and a book tight between her arms and breast. There were a few minutes where she sat in her memory and reminisced and felt lonely all over again, but it passed as quickly as it arrived.

The malnosso's message from yesterday burned in her mind. A chance to see her son again, just for a day, just to keep his face and her home in mind stronger. But at what cost, she wasn't sure. If it was only 24 hours, she could return and the mushi would weaken right back.

She supposes she'll have to consider it for later.

For now? She has a book to look through. Her conversation on the beach with Rin made her wonder if maybe... maybe she should be looking for something more. She's not entirely sure, and the entire thought leaves her red in the face a little. She's not entirely sure why... Aaah, but it just...

She sits and reads it quietly, but it fills her with questions than answers. If someone happens upon her here in her own little world (literally and non-literally), they'll find she has a peculiar book in hand.

Dating 101.]

[Voice]

... Do not mention your ex. What's an ex?

[Her voice grows to more audible levels as she directly talks to the journal. AHEM.]

Rule ten... do not show too much cleavage...

[What... does this even mean...]

Rule eleven, don't wear too much... 'foundation'? I'm not sure what they mean, really--I don't really know what cell phones are... This is so strange. [Deep breath. Well.] Um. Tell me... what does anyone know about--about dating? About romance? I don't think I know much, myself. It's a little embarrassing...

[Pause.]

What are high heels?

comments

[Long since returned home after her ordeal in the draft and her hospital time, Sayo has been reading. You see, when someone brings up a word, this woman here will learn the damn meaning of that word. And when she cannot find an actual meaning? Well, her determination flounders for but a moment! Aaaah, if only urbandictionary.com existed in Luceti. But even she has her limits, and she's all out of her own personal notes.

Finally with a sigh she drops her Merriam-Webster's Dictionary on the table, and turns to the whole of Luceti via her journal with a pleading sort of aura to the bend of her eyebrows.]

Does anyone know what a shithead is??

comments
