21st Memory [Voice/Action?]

[Sayo had a scary moment today. She'd opened her journal for review, flipped through the pages, and found herself speaking with someone she didn't recognize—she didn't recognize? She leaned in, scanned their faces, and her heart dropped into her stomach. And soon she found herself flipping to more and more pages, and they were there, and she knew them. She knew them!]

Crona-san...? K-kamina? Ciel?

Who—

[Suddenly, she's reminded of her faceless husband, and she flusters and grows cold all at once.

There were others. So many others. They had less to look for, but she had forgotten them all the same. Where they important to her? Where they friends? How could she have let this happen? How many others... She turns the page and starts a voice entry, trying to mask the growing anxiety bubbling under the surface of a quiet voice.]

[Voice]

U-um, if you–if you know me, can I talk to you? If you know me at all... I'd like to talk to you again...

[No, think of a good excuse for this. She clears her throat a bit, as if to unruffle some metaphorical feathers. Maybe some non-metaphorical ones, too. And then she pulls up a smile.]

Actually... I was wondering about the 'amusement' place. It just appeared, didn't it? I'm not sure what it is, but people seem like they're really interested in it. What does it do? Perhaps... a food place? Something for games? Have any of you gone yet?

[After that, it's time for venturing to work, and then to the tea shop! She was considering working it for a few hours after Seventh Heaven. It was at least good memories... Few, yes, but they were with Kaji, in their home. That was what mattered to her. It made her happy. Content, even with the usual problems in her day.]

Not at all. [His voice is soft - how do you explain this to someone who probably doesn't understand climate change?] ... In my world, many of the trees... perished due to various kinds of damage... ... paper was no longer an acceptable product because the trees that remained alive n-needed to be there. For... for the sake of the planet.

[Even now that recovery is more widespread, paper has become something of a frightening reminder of just what humanity used to be able to do to the planet.]

It... was a long time ago.

... But, yes, it was... deplorable. [He knits his fingers against his chest, a tad defensively.] ... The forests of Luceti at least are... artificial...

The whole place is... c-constructed, though. The biomes are just... incorrect. Species are in the w-wrong places, and food webs would be unstable...

... I suspect the Malnosso e-essentially place things at random in the enclosure. [If they can't even remember things from their homeworlds, like the Willow, then why would they remember things from a generic Terran-esque world?]

We are... essentially i-imported species of a sort. [He muses thoughtfully on this.] Certainly whatever process drives this is... a natural phenomenon, and yet...

... Well, I am not certain what terminology I would use...

Perhaps so. I... I would say our worlds have very different ideas on... e-essentially everything.

[His tone is unsure, but... ... he doesn't think this is necessarily bad, anymore. Foreign and strange, yes... but not bad.]

[Gods. It sounds so silly even now. But Robert has come a long way in terms of appreciating that other worlds might have different rules.]

... He must... have much to tell you about them... [Thoughtfully:] We had spoken about mushi, b-before.

[The mun still needs to have Robert get those notes...]

[But what causes that difference?]

... Why are they... o-only visible to some people, and not others? [It isn't technological, is it? And surely different humans can't see entirely different processes... unless subspecies of humans could see UV-A or something...

... yeah, magic and the paranormal still aren't the first things Robert thinks of in these situations.]

[That answer has never been satisfactory to Robert. It'd run counter to everything he is.]

... There is... a-always a reason for something, though...

[Every part of Robert wants to say that's... well, ridiculous. That the world doesn't exist for beings, but rather the other way around; that rainbows would exist whether people could perceive them or not, and indeed some people cannot; that like every other phenomenon the universe is unconcerned with their presence and would continue to have them occur whether they were affected or otherwise...

... And for a moment this shows in his face, in the way he purses his lips and fidgets somewhat.

But finally:]

... I would. To... t-to not ask beyond the surface - to not try to understand - would be unlike everything a s-scientist is supposed to be.

Truly, a rainbow is b-beautiful, whether you understand it or not. But... b-but knowing exactly how it comes into being - understanding why such a thing exists - only makes it even more b-beautiful.

I... suppose. [As much as he wants to rebel against that logic, he can't deny that other people think in different ways.] If it makes you h-happy, then... then I am not one to deny that.

Still... if you ever d-did want to understand, I... I would be happy to explain.

For now though... enjoy its b-beauty...
